KeymasterNew research on the Shroud of Turin by immunologist Dr Kelly Kearse from Johns Hopkins adds fuel to debates about biblical burial practices. The thing is earlier work from 1998 claimed Jesus body got washed before burial which doesn’t match scripture descriptions but Kearse’s lab experiments tell a different story.
By mimicking how blood acts after death and checking cloth transfers under UV they spotted serum halos around blood marks on the Shroud fabric turns out those only show up when blood clots first then touches linen basically means wounds weren’t cleaned before wrapping matches Jewish rules about leaving violent death bodies untouched.
The whole washing idea came from Dr Frederick Zugibe back in the day who used the Gospel of Peter text for his theory he figured unwashed crucified bodies would make messy stains but Kearse’s clear pattern findings don’t line up with that Zugibe thought blurry marks meant cleaning happened but now we see sharp edges instead.
Kearse argues no normal process could create those precise blood details from a washed corpse possibilities include fresh clots sticking straight to cloth or maybe dried blood getting damp in the tomb and transferring later anyway it doesn’t confirm the Shroud realness but makes the Bible’s linen burial story seem more plausible at least chemically speaking.
So yeah while not definitive proof this research gives physical backup to ancient accounts of how they handled Jesus body after crucifixion without breaking those strict cultural rules about washing you know how traditions were back then especially for execution victims kind of thing.
